Colour Cup

Colour Cup is a minimalist lamp shade that transforms a standard light bulb, as the translucent glass beads filter and colour the light to create a saturated impression. Colour Cup is made in cooperation with craftswomen from the Siyazama Project and Simuye Craft Collective in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. The Swedish-based initiative Editions in Craft invited Odgaard to set up a workshop with the women to develop a product that could be sold on the European market, giving them an opportunity to expand their market and export their products. The Colour Cups featured here were made by the master bead-crafters Lobolile Ximba and Phiwe Mchunu. The technique used to make the Colour Cup is inspired by African reed baskets, which are woven from the bottom up. In a technically challenging process, the method was translated to the new medium of glass beads.

Margrethe Odgaard views design as communication in a language of form, colour and material, and as a designer, she always keep in mind what her products communicate. She works in a range of materials, including textile, wood and ceramics, with a particular focus on the properties of the material and its interactions with colour. She often pushes her materials in new directions and likes to explore traditions and systems and give them a new expression. Odgaard takes a special interest in colours and patterns and always seeks to give these elements a functional purpose that goes beyond the purely decorative.
