Sit - Textile FurnitureA seat made from Finnish paper twine – inspired by the nests of the weaver bird. This piece was created using a technique where Heuser hand-knitted a three-dimensional ball shape, creating an open mesh with large stitches, subsequently filling the ball. The twine is entirely untreated, nor has it been combined with any other materials. Heuser worked the thread to make it create a series of interesting intermeshing patterns when knitted loosely. This was done in order to provide a special tactile and sculptural feel. A piece for looking, touching and resting, SIT – Textile Furniture comes in three sizes and is available in yellow, black, red, and white. |
Tine Kirkemann Heuser
b. 1967, Danish Textile Designer
Tine Kirkemann Heuser completed her training at the Institute of Product Design at Danmarks Designskole in 2005. Her latest works take their cue from traditional textile techniques and examines how to shape textile furniture through experiments with a number of different materials like wires, bicycle tubes, paper, and twine. Her textiles are investigations of form, inspired by nature, shaped like birds’ nests and fungi. Among other things she has been inspired by the nests of the weaver bird, which despite their delicate appearance are highly stable constructions. Using a simple weaving technique the birds make their nests without anything to keep it rigid, a thought Heuser finds so fascinating that she transferred it to a seat made from paper twine. The idea was to demonstrate how to create a simple yet functional sculptural shape that responds to pressure by creating a temporary hollow for resting. Sit – Textile Furniture was exhibited in 2005 at the Danish Museum of Decorative Art in Copenhagen and is now permanently represented in the museum collection as well as in Kunstforeningen af 14. August - a Copenhagen art society. Heuser will be participating in the Danish Design Centre’s next great exhibition in the spring of 2006, entitled “Honey I’m Home”. |
