Ruge’s artistic work takes place in the intersection of various media, materials and genres. She makes use of photographic techniques, sound and video, primarily in digital versions and often presented in installation form. Seeking an aesthetic mode of expression that at once integrates and confronts technology, Ruge thereby imbues it with qualities such as texture, poetry and presence. Her new works are based on the ‘dye sublimation’ technique which allows the transfer of digital images onto ceramics, metal, wood and textiles. This technique makes it possible to integrate photographic images with objects, furniture and architectural planes. She first used dye-sublimation on a series of tiles for the work ‘Genfortællinger’ – Retellings – which was shown at the Decembrist exhibition in Copenhagen, in 2005. Here the tiles were integrated into an authentic 1970’s tiled coffee-table, mixed in with the original tiles. Ruge has received several grants and awards in acknowledgement of her work, including the Eckersberg Medal in 1999, a three-year stipend from the Danish Arts Foundation, and an award from the Ole Haslund Artists’ Foundation in 2002.
