GothicGOTHIC is a candlestick whose visual expression denotes hot molten wax. The candlestick has a definite hand-made look and has been created centring on the idea of producing a candlestick with an anti-designed, playful and unpretentious ceramic form. The candlesticks are individually hand-made and subsequently glazed in shiny black. The name refers to the senses: barbarous, uncouth or ‘romantic’ and denotes a strange and original form. The candlestick is made from stoneware. |
Morten Løbner Espersen
b. 1965, Danish Ceramic Designer
Espersen completed his training in 1992 at Danmarks Designskole specialising in one-off pieces, spending a year at the École Supérieure des Arts Appliqués, Duperré, Paris. Today he works as an independent ceramist with his own workshop. Since 2005 he has taught as a professor at Högskolan för Design och Konsthandverk in Gothenburg. Espersen’s work centres on the theme of beauty, whose limitations he always challenges. Often containers are the sculptural starting point for his experimental forms. Here he investigates how to create significant ceramic surfaces. He works both in large and little formats but his entire work slot into the Danish tradition for ceramics. Espersen has a series of exhibitions behind him both at home and internationally. Today his works are represented at the Danish Museum of Decorative Art in Copenhagen, as well as the Swedish National Museum in Stockholm, and Museum Boijmans van Beuningen in Rotterdam. He has also received several grants from the Danish National Bank’s Jubilee Foundation, as well as an award from the Ole Haslund Artists’ Foundation in 1998. |
