Airport / HappinessAIRPORT is a series of simple jewellery referring to travel memories. The jewellery is made from silver and porcelain tiles from Charles de Gaulle Airport in Paris. Just as she arrived here, Vallejo was enjoying the architecture in Terminal 2 where the floor and the walls consist of small, round, porcelain tiles. A man restoring the floor gave her a couple of loose tiles and the idea of a series of jewellery began to take shape. The end result was a bracelet, a brooch, a ring, earrings and cufflinks. The series is to be expanded with mementos of other airports. HAPPINESS is a glass and silver ring shaped like a beautiful ruby-red bubble of glass set in silver. The feeling of happiness is an internal quality – a form of inner strength. Happiness can be held onto by cherishing it, by defending its virtues. Otherwise it breaks. The external benefits are insignificant to ‘goodness’, to true happiness. Happiness embodies a direct translation of the concept. |
Carolina Vallejo
b. 1966, Danish Jewellery Designer
Vallejo graduated from the Escola Massana in Barcelona, Spain in 1998 and from Guldsmedehøjskolen, Institut for Ædelmetal, in Copenhagen in 2001. She consciously works with materials that can imbue her ideas with layers of meaning, often gleaning inspiration from existential topics and philosophical questions that she seeks to debate through her choice of materials, design and use for the proposed piece. The themes of her objects and jewellery spring from thoughts with historical, social or symbolic starting points. Her work has been shown at a series of exhibitions both in Denmark and abroad including solo exhibitions at Centro de Arte Contemporaneo Wilfredo Lam, in Havana, Cuba as well as at Sagianno’s Gallery, Athens, Greece. In 2002 she received Danish Crafts’ Book Award for her publication Reliqvium. In 2003 Carolina Vallejo received a 3-year working grant from the Danish Arts Foundation in recognition of her work. | By same artist: |
