Mai Therese Ørsted b. 1970, Danish Glass Designer
Mai Therese Ørsted has degrees from the University of Wolverhampton, Orrefors Glaskolan, Penland School of Crafts and the Haystack Mountains School in the USA. Ørsted’s works are represented in the North Lands Creative Glass Centre Collection, and 2008 she exhibits at 100% Light in London and Light Fair International in Las Vegas. In addition, she participated in the exhibition “Cutting Edge” at the National Museums of Scotland. Ørsted works with glass and light as her primary materials. With glass as her essential medium, she combines traditional techniques within this discipline, including diamond wheel carving with digital laser-based cutting techniques. She takes inspiration from nature, which holds countless solutions to challenges of construction and design. |

BotanicsThe jewellery collection Botanics is made in clear and coloured glass and features two stylised motifs: “leaf” and “rose”. The colour variations are green, red and clear, and the glass is suspended on a light organza string and mounted in silver. Her goal was to create a piece of glass jewellery that is light-weight and therefore pleasant to wear, and which expresses an aesthetic relationship between the elements of reflection, light and shadow. The technique behind the product is that the glass is blown and spun to a dish; subsequently, the shape is cut with a mix of water and garnet dust that passes through the glass at a speed of 1,000 metres a second. Finally, the cut glass is decorated with a diamond wheel. |
