Mariko Wada b. 1972, Japanese Ceramic Designer
Wada graduated from Doshisha University in Japan in 1995. Since 1998, she has lived in Denmark, where, in 2006, she graduated from Designskolen Kolding. Wada’s work explores the expressive potential of ceramics. She works mainly in stoneware, and uses a variety of modelling techniques to focus on designs that have both a visual and a tactile appeal. Her jar series Software illustrates how the hard stoneware can be worked to take on a soft, organic visual appearance. Wada’s works have been exhibited in many venues throughout Denmark, and in 2007 she was invited to exhibit at the International Museum of Ceramics in Faenza, Italy. She has also received several grants, most recently Danmarks Nationalbank’s Anniversary Grant in 2006. |
Software - Jar no.1 and Jar no. 2 // Super SoftwareSoftware is a set of two handmade jars in coloured stoneware. The jars represent an attempt to achieve a new ceramic expression as well as an experiment with an abstract expression that emphasises softness as the visual experience; an expression that Wada highlights by polishing the jars lightly with sandpaper after the firing. The name Software sparks associations to the computer world, but here the name refers to the soft visual character of the stoneware. Jar No. 1 is available in grey and black, while No. 2 comes in pink. Their approximate dimensions: H: 18 cm, Ø: 15 cm. Software II Super Software is an exclusive version of Software I. Like Software I, it is hand-modelled, but it is considerably larger, and the expression emphasises the heft of the vase. The jar is available in blue-green: the approximate dimensions. H: 21 cm, Ø: 25 cm. | By same artist: |
