Eric Nathan Landon

b. 1976, American Ceramic Designer

American designer and ceramist. Eric Nathan Landon graduated as a ceramist from Danmarks Designskole in 2007. His conceptual projects use the act of making as a means of examining and uncovering possible imbalances between the modern human reality and basic human nature.
Landon’s work is experimental as he incorporates the use of video and digital techniques when working with hand-made ceramic objects, thus presenting ceramic works in quite a different visual context. Another aspect of Landon’s work, which certainly marks it as untypical, is that he limits his projects to the use of a single object as the basis for examination. Therefore his work is not concerned with the creation of new ceramic forms, but the creation of new contexts for a single form.
The serial productions, which often result in the realization of thousands of hand-made ceramic objects, place critical questions to the public about the evolving human perception of value, in light of our technologically advanced mass-culture. Rooted in ceramic hand-work, the projects place the traditional, economic, and social significance of the hand-made object in the context of modern industrial, technological, and commercial trends. An aim for Landon’s work is thus to uncover how this evolving perception of value effects our sense of individual and social identity.

MaDi Collection

MaDi is a collectible series of boxes containing 1, 4, and 8 ceramic objects from a project titled Maker Diseconomy. This production of 10,000 unique hand-made objects over two months gives insight into the alienating nature of mass-production, as a maker struggles to meet his quantitative goal. These unique ceramic objects all are wheel-thrown in an identical manner and then manually altered. The boxes are assembled from easily accessible materials.
